Projects

One of the purposes of the SMCPAAA is to raise money for unbudgeted, needed items for the San Marcos Police Department. Over the years and through various efforts we have been able to provide the PD with some much needed things from drug sniffing dogs to exercise equipment. Read below to see what all we've been able to give back to the SMPD.

Shaken Baby Doll
The Shaken Baby Doll was purchased in late January 2009 for use by several criminal justice agencies. The equipment, manufactured by RealityWorks, was designed to demonstrate the physical effects of shaking an infant or toddler. The equipment and training materials can be used by city and county personnel to train law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, students, adult citizens, and many others on the dangers of shaking a child. Further, the doll can be used for demonstration of the effects on a child in courtrooms and for grand jury presentations.

Shaking the life-sized infant simulator is disturbing. Watching the damage progress across the brain through illuminated LED lights is powerful. Hearing the piercing cry abruptly stop is heartbreaking. There’s no denying the devastating effects of shaking a baby with this new, electronic simulator in your hands.

Treadmill
In December 2007, the SMCPAAA purchased a new treadmill for the San Marcos PD Physical Ready Room. Known as “Old Sparky”, the former treadmill had a small wiring problem that, instead of motiving, kept our officers from getting in their cardio workout.

Picture for Report Writing Room
As the police department worked to update the building with a fresh coat of paint, several officers mentioned the need for some classy art work as well. While a “Velvet Elvis” couldn’t be found, in November 2007 a nicely framed “Dogs Playing Poker” was found and added to the report writing room.

Digital Cameras
Often patrol officers need to take pictures of collisions, property damage, etc. Prior to 2006, officers would have to wait for a patrol supervisor who had a camera to come to the scene. The SMCPAAA purchased digital cameras for all of the patrol cars in April 2006.

Bicycles
Through fundraising projects, such as Mystery Theatre, Garage Sale, Wurstfest Parking Patrol, and brass ammo recycling, the SMCPAAA purchased five bicycles in April 2005 for the San Marcos PD Bike Patrol. Some were replacements and some were additional bikes that the patrol needed, but did not have money in the budget for the purchases. The bikes were used by the downtown and Outlet Mall officers.

K-9 Unit
In 2003, one of the San Marcos PD K-9 units became disabled and could no longer work. Through fundraising efforts including our third Mystery Theatre, Wurstfest Parking Patrol, and our new program, San Marcos’ Only Air-Conditioned Garage Sale held in the SMPD bay, the SMCPAAA purchased a replacement drug dog, "Benno," for the department. There was no money in the department's budget for a replacement dog at the time.

Lighting Equipment for CPAAA Truck
In 2003, the police department had overhead lights taken off of other police vehicles to put on the CPAAA truck but did not have, and could not pay for, a directional arrow stick for the truck. We purchased the directional arrow stick for the CPAAA truck with money raised from cleaning up the UT Stadium after football games in 2001 and helping with parking at Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX in 2002 and 2003.

Lights & Mounts for Rifles
To make the rifles carried by the officers more usable for night-time operations, in April 2002 we were able to purchase rifle lights and mounts. This project was funded by our second Mystery Dinner Theater.

Simunitions
Our first project. Along with prior money raised from Ducky Derby, in February 2000 the Alumni Association held its first Mystery Dinner and raised enough money to provide the police department with “Simunitions” training equipment. Simunitions is a scenario based training program that gets as close to “actual events” training as possible, yet maintain a safe training environment. This was the first large project the Alumni Association provided to the department.
